Hey, I'm

Martene.

A magnificent new reality appears when you become the architect of your own life.

You just have to be brave enough to stop, breathe, and design it.

Growing up

I often heard the words, “We can’t afford it.”

I would see my cousins go to Disneyland during the school holidays and it was something I craved.

While we didn’t have much money, my Mum taught me I could achieve anything I put my mind to.

I just had to be willing to stick with it and do the work.

As an adult, I did everything I was told to be “successful”.

I got a degree, I got a “good” job and I worked damn hard.

I threw myself into my nursing career becoming a registered nurse, completing post graduate studies and getting promoted along the way.

According to society’s standards, I was a massive success.

I had certificates on the wall and had worked my way up to the position of clinical nurse manager.

Pop the champagne and blow the streamers, Martene had “made it”!

But if you scratched the surface

Life was less than ideal.

While I’ve always been an unshakeable optimist, the relentless work was taking its toll.

Studying a Masters while working 60-hour weeks and raising three children under five? Not that easy.

There were two events that made me wake up and reassess my life.

Working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

I saw a lot of lives taken too soon. One particular case struck me to my core.

A guy in his 30s was lying in the ICU with a brainstem infarct (bleed). He looked fit, healthy and strong, as though he could wake up any second. But he wouldn’t.

I’ll never forget the image of his mum and son at the end of his bed.

I thought, It could be me in that bed. Or it could be me standing at the end of it. I have to live, really live, not just exist.

The second event was even closer to home.

I was working a particularly long and shitty shift which coincided with my son’s first birthday.

While I was trying to manage the ward, my husband sent me a picture of my son blowing out his candle.

Everyone was there except me.

I was missing that magical moment and I thought, This is bullshit. I knew I could never get that moment back.

I wanted to spend more time with my family.

I wanted to travel. I wanted success, adventure, excitement, balance and real fulfilment.

I wanted to live life on my own terms, make my own rules.

I wanted choice. I wanted to make an impact. And I got all this and more.

I followed my gut and started to build a home-based business, increasing my supplementary income.

As a natural self-esteem-booster, I started mentoring women working in our community and within 11 months I had replaced my nurse management salary on a weekly level.

That’s when I discovered my ultimate purpose – helping hard-working women redefine what success means and find true, lasting fulfilment whilst having fun. Family, income, impact and success. All on their own terms. Not at the cost of having a life.

I’m now blessed to travel full-time with my fam, living and loving the digital gypsy lifestyle as you’ll see first hand on our Free to Explore travel blog

I want all women to feel like I do now.

If I dropped dead tomorrow, it would be with zero regrets and a huge smile on my face.

Are there still things I want to do? Of course, but these days I choose faith over fear and go after what I want.

Up until the age of 31, I had only travelled to New Zealand. Now? My kids have been to 19 countries.

I have a thriving global business that gives me the freedom to explore, connect, create impact, generate an incredible income and be there for every birthday, every precious moment.

I’ve learned that life begins when you shed the shackles of societal expectations and create your own formula for success.

I’ve learned that when you are in alignment with your true self, your positive energy naturally flows onto others, it’s infectious.

And that, changes the world.

And I’ve learned that you can have it all, but “all” might look different to what you initially thought.

“When I think about Martene, my mind inevitably concludes that she is part strategist, part thought provoker, and part cheerleader.

She has a masterful knack for knowing when to invoke these various skills to bring out a clarity of purpose and desire that is often hard to pinpoint on your own.

She has a way of repackaging your own, sometimes confusing, thoughts in a way that adds meaningful direction.”
